What the number means
The definition is oddly specific: take 9,000 meters of the yarn, weigh it in grams, and that's the denier. So a 70D fabric is woven from yarn roughly twice as heavy as 30D yarn, and the finished fabric is usually about twice as substantial.
Typical deniers in hiking gear
It shows up everywhere in lightweight gear. Pack bodies run from 70D up to 400D and beyond, tent flys sit around 15D to 30D, and tent floors run higher because they take abrasion from the ground. Comparing two similar items by denier is a decent shortcut for guessing which will last longer.
Why denier alone is not durability
It's a shortcut with real limits, though. Denier says nothing about the fiber, so 30D of Dyneema and 30D of ordinary nylon are not comparable. It says nothing about the weave, so a ripstop grid can make a lower-denier fabric far more tear-resistant than a plain-woven higher one. And it says nothing about coatings, which is where a lot of a fabric's waterproofing and abrasion resistance actually lives.
Typical deniers, item by item
Ultralight tent canopies run 7D to 20D and standard ones 20D to 40D, with floors a step heavier at 15D to 70D. Pack bodies span 70D to 420D and pack bottoms often double that. Wind shells sit around 7D to 20D, rain shells 20D to 40D, and hardwearing trousers well above that.
Reading those ranges against each other is what makes the number useful. A 15D floor is a deliberate ultralight choice that demands a groundsheet and care about where you pitch; a 70D floor is a tent you can be careless with.
Why two fabrics at the same denier differ
Denier describes one yarn, not the cloth. Weave density decides how many of those yarns are packed in, and a tight weave at 30D outperforms a loose one at 70D on tear strength and on how well it holds a coating. Fiber matters even more: 30D of high-tenacity nylon and 30D of standard polyester are not comparable materials.
Then there is what is on top of it. A silicone impregnation, a polyurethane coating or a laminate all change abrasion and tear behavior, and none of them change the denier printed on the spec sheet.

Comparing denier across different fibers
A number only compares like with like. High-tenacity nylon, polyester and Dyneema at the same denier have very different strength, so denier is useful within a material and misleading across materials.

Is higher denier always more durable?
Within one fabric type, usually yes. Across types, no. A 30D ripstop nylon can outlast a 70D plain weave, and Dyneema at low denier outperforms much heavier nylon.
What denier should a backpacking tent be?
Flys commonly sit between 15D and 30D, with floors heavier because they take ground abrasion. Under 15D is genuinely fragile and worth pairing with a footprint or a carefully chosen pitch.
