What separates a crampon from microspikes?
Three things: point length, how it mounts, and what it is rated to hold. Crampon points run up to 5 cm, against roughly 10 to 17 mm on a microspike, and they are carried on a steel or aluminum frame rather than on chains under a stretchy harness. That rigidity is the whole point. Chains have give in them, and give is exactly what you do not want when the points have to take your body weight on a face rather than simply grip a surface underfoot.
The mounting is the second difference and the one that catches people out. A crampon needs a boot stiff enough not to flex the frame, and a step-in binding needs a welted mountaineering boot with a toe and heel ledge to lock into. Strap bindings are more forgiving of boot shape, but a soft trail shoe still flexes enough to pop a crampon off. A microspike, by contrast, goes over almost anything in fifteen seconds.
Many crampons also carry anti-balling plates, a sheet of plastic under the frame that stops wet snow packing into a platform between the points. Microspikes have nothing equivalent, which is why they ball up in warm snow and skate.
When do you actually need crampons?
The usable rule is about consequence, not steepness: if a slip would become a slide you could not stop, you are on crampon ground. The field version pairs the two tools that belong together. If you need an ice axe you need crampons, and on any route where you need crampons you need an axe, because the crampons keep you on the slope and the axe is what stops you when they do not.
The Appalachian Mountain Club draws the same line in its winter gear list: microspikes for relatively flat to moderately steep terrain, crampons for steeper terrain, 8 to 10 points for general mountaineering and 14 or more for ice climbing, with a 65 to 75 cm axe above treeline. It also says the part people skip, which is that the gear is useless without the technique. Self-arrest is a trained skill, and a course is the honest way to get it.
The trap is that the transition is invisible. A packed snow trail can steepen and harden without any obvious moment where it becomes a different problem, which is why the decision is one to make from the map before you are standing on it.
What do the standards cover?
Crampons are governed by a written safety standard, and this is the sharpest way to see the boundary. EN 893:2019 sets safety requirements and test methods for crampons used in mountaineering on snow and ice, covering tensile strength, rigidity and deformation of the points. UIAA 153 builds on it with further requirements applied to the metal part regardless of binding type.
Nothing equivalent exists for microspikes, ice cleats or coil traction. There is no ASTM, ISO, EN or UIAA standard specifying what a pull-on traction device has to do, which means the cold ratings and spike counts on those products are manufacturer claims rather than certified figures. That gap is real and worth knowing: the tier that carries the standard is the tier meant for ground where a failure is serious.

Which to pick: Microspikes for winter and shoulder-season trail, which covers most hiking. Crampons and an axe once a fall would keep going, and only with the training to use both.
The common mistake
Buying crampons instead of learning to use them
Crampons are the one piece of winter gear that makes a hiker more dangerous when bought untrained. Points catch trouser cuffs and gaiters, flat-footing and front-pointing are different techniques for different angles, and none of it is obvious. Worse, carrying them without an ice axe encourages exactly the terrain where the axe is the thing that saves you. Take a course before the mountain.
