Where Megagrip sits in Vibram's range
Vibram makes many compounds, and Megagrip is the one that turns up in the specification list of most shoes marketed for wet, rocky ground. It's a softer rubber with a formulation aimed at holding friction on smooth wet surfaces, which is where ordinary hiking rubber loses confidence.
What it does on wet rock
The effect is real and noticeable on wet rock slabs, wet roots and polished stone, the surfaces that cause most trail falls. It does less for you in mud, where grip is about lug penetration and shape rather than compound, so a Megagrip sole with shallow lugs is still bad in a bog.
What the softness costs
The trade is lifespan. Softer rubber abrades faster, so a Megagrip outsole on hard, abrasive rock or road wears visibly quicker than a harder compound. Vibram's Litebase construction, often paired with it, thins the rubber layer to save weight, which shortens things further. Buying it means accepting you're paying for grip rather than mileage.
