What the number actually measures
The figure is a weight per unit area, not the weight of insulation in the boot. A boot described as 200g is built with insulation whose sheet weighs 200 grams per square meter, so the number describes the material rather than how much of it went in or how much heat the finished boot traps.
That distinction matters because two boots quoting the same figure can be meaningfully different. How much of the boot is lined, how thick the insulation under the footbed is, how tall the shaft is and how much cold hardware sits against the foot all move real warmth without moving the number at all.
Why warmth does not scale with the number
Doubling the figure does not double the warmth. 400g is a clear step up from 200g, and it is a long way short of twice as warm, because insulation works by trapping still air and the returns fall off as the sheet gets heavier. The weight and bulk penalty, by contrast, arrives in full and you carry it every step.
Matching the number to your pace
The useful rule is to match insulation to effort rather than to the forecast. A hiker climbing with a pack generates most of their own heat, so 200g covers a lot of winter. Somebody moving slowly, standing around, or out in deep cold has no such heat source, and that is where 400g earns its weight.
