Sizing runs off that combined figure, and the usual mistake is to buy for body weight and then wonder why a full winter pack drops you to the knee anyway.

That's why flotation is ranked first here. Then traction, because the trail that needs flotation at dawn can be a sheet of refrozen crust by mid-afternoon. Then the binding, the one part you have to operate with numb hands in the dark. Then heel lifts, which sound like a gimmick right up until your first long climb.

What to Check Before You Buy

What size snowshoe do you need, and why does your own weight decide it?

Snowshoe size is quoted as deck length in inches, and it's really a flotation rating wearing a different name. A longer, wider deck spreads your load over more snow, so you sink less. Makers publish a recommended load range for each size, and that range covers you plus your clothing plus your pack, not what the bathroom scale says in the morning.

Missing that is the most common sizing error there is. Winter clothing, boots, water, layers and a day's food add up fast, and a full overnight pack can add a third again on top. Size for body weight alone and then load up, and you've moved yourself into the next bracket without changing shoes.

Bigger isn't simply better, though. A long deck is heavier to lift a few thousand times, clumsier in trees and on sidehills, and it forces a wider stance that most people feel in their hips by the end of the day. Buy the smallest size that carries your loaded weight in the snow you actually walk in.

Snow condition shifts the answer too. Dense, wind-packed or spring snow holds you up far better than dry powder does, so the same person can be fine on a 22-inch shoe in the East and want a 30 in Rocky Mountain powder. If you split your time between the two, look at the modular route: both MSR Evo models take add-on flotation tails that clip to the back and give you the extra length only on the days you need it.

What kind of traction do you actually need underfoot?

Traction on a snowshoe comes in two layers, and only one of them is obvious. The first is the crampon under the ball of your foot, a set of steel teeth that bite when you step down. Every shoe here has one. It's what keeps your foot from sliding backward on a climb, and it's the part people shop for.

The second layer runs along the edges, and that's what separates the shoes on this page. Traction rails running lengthwise down the deck grip well when you push straight ahead. The binding is the part of a snowshoe you actually operate, and you operate it in the worst conditions the day has going: cold hands, thick gloves, crouched in wind with snow blowing into everything. A binding that's fiddly in a warm living room is close to unusable an hour into a real outing, and that's the most common reason a pair ends up staying home.

Three approaches show up here. Strap-and-buckle systems are the traditional answer and the easiest to repair, but they want two hands and some fine motor control. Then check it fits the boot you already own. Bindings are built around bulky insulated winter footwear, and a slim three-season hiking shoe can be too small to hold securely. MSR publishes a fitted shoe-size range for each of its models instead of leaving you to guess, which I wish more makers did.

What is a heel lift, and when does it earn its place?

A heel lift is a small wire or plastic bar behind your heel that flips up so the back of your boot rests on it instead of dropping to the deck. MSR calls its version a Televator; most other makers just call it a climbing bar. It costs a few ounces and takes a second to flip up with a pole tip.

It changes the angle your ankle has to hold on a sustained climb. Without one, every step up a steep slope stretches your calf out to full extension and keeps it there, and the fatigue piles up fast. With the bar up, your heel sits at something closer to level ground, and your calves stop doing all the work.

It only matters on sustained steep ground. On flat and rolling terrain the bar is dead weight and stays folded all day, which is why several perfectly good recreational shoes leave it off and are better for it. If your winter walking is lake loops and forest roads, don't pay for one.

If any part of your season involves grinding up a drainage or a summit approach, treat it as close to mandatory. Not much else on the shoe changes how far you can go in a day by as much, and the pairs here that have one climb noticeably better than the pairs that don't.

If your winter walking is broken trails, lake loops and rolling woods, you need flotation and a toe crampon and very little else. A one-piece molded deck is the right answer: it's tough, there's no frame to bend, and it's the cheapest way to get a pair that'll still be working in ten years.

Flotation comes down to surface area, and past a certain load the only real answer is more deck. That means a longer shoe, an add-on tail, or both. Dry powder and a full overnight pack are the two things that push people up a size, and they stack when they show up together.

Two routes work. Buy long outright, which is what the 30-inch Retrospec does cheaply, or buy a modular MSR Evo and clip flotation tails on for the trips that need them. Modular costs more, and it's the better answer if your conditions swing week to week.

Once the terrain tilts and the snow sets up hard, the question stops being flotation and becomes whether the shoe holds an edge across a slope. A crampon under the toe doesn't. Steel around the whole perimeter does, and nothing else on this page substitutes for it.

That's the MSR Lightning Ascent, ranked first here and first at OutdoorGearLab. It already has the heel lifts, so add a pair of adjustable poles. Overkill on a flat trail, and the only honest choice on an alpine one.

Getting started

Your first day on snowshoes

Snowshoeing has almost no learning curve as a skill and a steep one as a planning problem. None of the technique is hard. What gets people is how much slower and more tiring it is than the same distance in summer.

    Fit the bindings at home, warm and indoors

    Put your actual winter boots on and set the bindings up on the living room floor. Learn which strap is which and how far each one has to go, so the first time you do it isn't crouched in the wind with cold hands.

    Pick a trail you already know, and halve it

    A familiar summer route takes navigation out of the problem, and winter changes it enough that it's still interesting. Plan for about half your usual distance. Breaking trail in fresh snow can cut your pace by more than that.

    Go after someone else, at least once

    A trail other snowshoers have already packed is far easier than untouched snow, and it's a fair introduction to the movement without the full workload of breaking trail.

    Once you've done a packed route, go break some trail on purpose, so you learn what your real pace is before it matters.

    Learn the wide stance early

    Your feet have to track wider than usual so the decks don't clip each other. It feels strange for about ten minutes and then you stop noticing. Stepping on your own shoe is the most common way beginners go down.

    Practice turning and getting up before you need to

    Turning around in deep snow means a wide step-around, not a pivot, because a deck buried in snow won't rotate. To get up after a fall, roll onto your knees and push off your poles laid flat instead of trying to stand straight up.

    Use the heel lift on every sustained climb

    If your shoes have one, flip it up with a pole tip at the bottom of the climb, not partway up when your calves are already burning. It costs a second and you'll feel the difference at the top.

Flotation
How well a shoe keeps you on top of the snow. A function of deck surface area against your loaded weight, and the whole point of the product.
Deck
The solid surface that does the floating, either stretched over a frame or molded as one piece. Its length in inches is how snowshoes are sized.
Toe crampon
The steel teeth under the ball of your foot that bite when you step down. Every snowshoe has one; it's the baseline of traction, not all of it.
Traction rail
A steel bar running lengthwise along the underside of the deck. Grips well going forward, much less across a slope.
Heel lift
A bar that flips up under your heel on climbs so your calf isn't held at full stretch. MSR calls it a Televator; others call it a climbing bar.
Flotation tail
A clip-on extension that lengthens the deck for deep snow or a heavy pack, so one pair of shoes covers two sizes' worth of conditions.
Postholing
Sinking a leg deep into snow with every step. What snowshoes exist to prevent, and exhausting enough to end a day early.
Breaking trail
Being the first person through unpacked snow, compressing it for everyone behind. Far harder than following, and the reason groups rotate the lead.
Avoid These

Mistakes worth skipping

  • Sizing on body weight instead of body weight plus clothing and a loaded pack, which quietly puts you a size short on exactly the deep days you bought snowshoes for.
  • Buying the biggest shoe available on the theory that more flotation is always better. A long deck is heavier to lift, clumsy in trees, and forces a stance most people feel in their hips by afternoon.
  • Wearing three-season hiking shoes in the binding. They're often too slim to hold securely, and they're cold once you stand still on snow.
  • Bringing summer trekking poles without swapping the small trail baskets for wide snow baskets, which leaves you with poles that sink instead of holding you up.
  • Skipping gaiters. Snowshoes throw snow up the back of your calf constantly, and it melts into the boot cuff.
  • Planning a normal summer distance. Snowshoe travel is much slower and winter days are short, and the two of them add up to finishing in the dark.
  • Buying a flat-terrain recreational shoe and then taking it somewhere with sustained sidehill, where traction rails alone won't hold an edge.
  • Putting them away damp at the end of the season, which rusts the crampons and hinge pins by the time you next need them.
