What is a bite valve?

A bite valve is the silicone mouthpiece on the end of a hydration reservoir's drink tube. It stays shut until your teeth compress a slit in it, then self-seals when you let go, so water only flows while you are drinking.

How does a bite valve work?

A bite valve is a moulded silicone tip with a slit through it, and the slit is held shut by the silicone's own tension. Compressing it between your teeth pulls the slit open and water flows; letting go lets the silicone snap back and reseal. There is no spring and no moving part, which is why the design has survived essentially unchanged for decades and why a healthy valve holds a full reservoir against gravity indefinitely.

That is the whole appeal. You never break stride, never take a hand off a pole and never open a lid, so over a day you drink far more than you would from a bottle. Most valves also carry a dust cover or a sheath, which matters more than it sounds: the valve rides at chest height on a shoulder strap and picks up whatever your pack brushes against.

Why does a bite valve dribble?

Almost never because the silicone has failed. Two things cause the leak people blame on the valve. The first is grit in the slit, a grain of sand or a crust of dried drink mix holding it a fraction open, which a rinse and a hard squeeze under running water usually clears. The second is pressure: the assembly gets compressed against a car seat or squashed under a pack lid, the slit opens, and it keeps flowing until the bag is empty.

Sugar is the underrated cause of the first one. Drink mix dries to a film inside the valve and along the full length of the tube, and once it has set nothing short of a soak and a brush shifts it. If you use electrolytes, run plain water through the valve before the reservoir goes back in a cupboard.

What is the shutoff for, and where does it sit?

The shutoff is a mechanical stop that makes the pressure failure impossible, and it sits in one of two places. At the valve itself it is a quarter-turn collar or a thumb lever right at your mouth, which is the version you actually remember to use because it is where your hand already is. HydraPak says its Comet valve can be opened and locked one-handed for exactly this reason, and Platypus sells the HyFLO to work with the shutoff valves on its own reservoirs.

The other placement is at the reservoir's exit port, where the tube leaves the bag. CamelBak's Crux uses a lever there, and it seals the hose at source so nothing can even enter the tube. Either one is worth closing whenever the pack goes in a car boot, a locker or an overhead bin, which is when most of the mystery soakings happen.

What decides how much water you get per bite?

Two things: the inner diameter of the drink tube and the size of the valve's opening. The two common bores are a quarter inch and five sixteenths of an inch, which sounds like a rounding error and is not, because flow through a tube climbs steeply with radius.

Platypus pairs its one-piece HyFLO valve with a larger five sixteenths of an inch tube on the Big Zip EVO and credits the pair with the improvement, and CamelBak advertises a fifth more water per sip for the Crux, which uses its Big Bite valve.

Source takes the problem somewhere else entirely. Its Storm valve is an angled push-pull spout with a turn-to-shut mechanism, and you do not bite it at all: you pull the tip out with your teeth or a finger and water runs. It moves more water than a slit can pass, at the cost of a valve that is open until you close it, which is the trade the whole category is arguing about.

  • A shutoff you can work one-handed, at the valve or at the exit port
  • A dust cover or sheath, since the valve rides where your pack rubs
  • Whether the maker sells the valve on its own as a spare part
  • Tube bore, because a wider tube is a noticeably faster drink

Which to pick: A bite valve if you want the tube sealed by default. A push-pull spout if you want the fastest drink on the page and will remember to close it.

The common mistake

Blaming the valve for a leak the shutoff would have stopped

A self-sealing valve holds a full reservoir on its own. What it cannot survive is being compressed in a packed car boot, which forces the slit open and empties the bag into your gear. Close the shutoff any time the pack is out of your hands, and rinse the valve through after anything but plain water.

Common questions

Why is my bite valve leaking?

Usually grit or dried drink mix holding the slit open, or the valve being squashed against something while the pack was packed. Rinse it, squeeze it hard under running water, and use the shutoff whenever the pack is not on your back.

Can you replace just the bite valve?

On any reservoir from a real brand, yes, and it is the cheapest repair on the whole system. HydraPak, Platypus, CamelBak and Source all sell their valves separately, which is a large part of why an unbranded reservoir is a false economy.

Are bite valves interchangeable between brands?

Sometimes, since several use a quarter inch tube, but the fit is friction and the shutoff collars behind the valve are proprietary. Buy the valve that matches your reservoir rather than assuming a spare from another brand will seal.

Canister stove

A canister stove screws directly onto a sealed cartridge of pressurised isobutane-propane. It lights instantly, simmers well and needs no priming, which is why it's the default backpacking stove almost everywhere fuel canisters are sold.

Integrated stove system

An integrated stove system pairs a burner with a matched pot that locks on, usually with a heat exchanger ring on the base. It boils water faster and uses less fuel than a separate stove and pot, at the cost of versatility.

Regulated valve

A regulated valve holds a stove's fuel pressure steady as the canister empties or cools. Without one, output drops off through the canister's life and falls sharply in the cold; with one, the flame stays consistent much further down.

Isobutane-propane blend

Isobutane-propane is the fuel blend inside standard threaded backpacking canisters, usually around 80 percent isobutane and 20 percent propane. Propane provides cold-weather pressure, isobutane provides most of the burn time.

Hollow fiber filter

A hollow fiber filter passes water through a bundle of tiny straw-like tubes whose walls are perforated with pores around 0.1 to 0.2 microns. It's the technology in almost every modern backpacking filter, and a single freeze can destroy it invisibly.

Micron rating

A micron rating states the largest particle a filter lets through, in microns. Backpacking filters are typically rated 0.1 or 0.2 microns, which stops bacteria and protozoa. Viruses are around 0.02 microns and pass straight through.

Flow rate

Flow rate is how fast a filter delivers clean water, usually quoted in liters per minute. The advertised figure is measured on a brand-new filter with clean water, and real flow drops as the element clogs with sediment.

Backflushing

Backflushing pushes clean water backwards through a filter to dislodge the sediment clogging its pores. It's routine maintenance on a hollow fiber filter, and it's the difference between one that lasts a season and one that lasts years.

Purifier vs filter

A filter physically strains out bacteria and protozoa. A purifier also deals with viruses, which are too small to strain, using chemistry, UV light or a much finer element. Most backcountry hiking needs a filter; international travel often needs a purifier.

Soft flask

A soft flask is a collapsible bottle, usually 250 to 750 ml, carried in the front pockets of a hydration vest. It shrinks as you drink so it doesn't slosh, and you can see exactly how much water you have left.

Hydration bladder

A hydration bladder is a flat water reservoir carried inside a pack with a drinking hose routed over the shoulder. It holds 1.5 to 3 liters, packs flat against your back and lets you drink without stopping or taking the pack off.

Quick disconnect

A quick disconnect is the two-part coupling in a hydration hose that lets you unclip the tube from the reservoir without threading it back through your pack. Both halves usually self-seal, so you can pull the bag out to refill and neither end drips.

Hard-anodized aluminum

Hard-anodized aluminum is aluminum whose surface has been grown into a thick, very hard oxide layer by an electrochemical bath. In cookware it gives a pot that spreads heat far more evenly than titanium and resists scratching far better than bare aluminum.
