Water bladders vs soft flasks
A hose on your shoulder strap means you drink without stopping. Flasks on your chest mean you always know what's left, and they refill in seconds. Which of those you need more of decides the rest.

The short version
- A hose makes drinking free. The Park Service's advice for a hot day is to sip regularly whether or not you feel thirsty, and a bite valve at your collarbone makes that easy to actually do.
- Flasks tell you where you stand. You can see and feel what's left, which is the one thing a reservoir can't give you, and on a route with uncertain water that's worth more than capacity.
- The water weighs the same either way, roughly 2.2 pounds a liter. You're not choosing how much to carry. You're choosing where it sits and how easily you can reach it.
- Refills are where flasks win outright. A flask comes out of a vest pocket and goes back full in seconds. A reservoir usually means the pack comes off and gets partly unpacked.
- Reservoirs need looking after and flasks mostly don't. Anything you can't dry out properly will eventually grow something.
Almost everyone asks this as if one container is better than the other. The containers aren't really the difference. You're picking between two things you might want from your water: to drink constantly without thinking about it, or to know exactly how much is left.
A reservoir is very good at the first and hopeless at the second. Soft flasks are the reverse. Figure out which of those two problems your day has and the rest follows. Plenty of people end up carrying one of each for perfectly good reasons.

Reservoir, soft flask, hard bottle
Soft flasks are the interesting comparison, but a hard bottle is what most people are actually leaving behind, so it belongs in the table. Read down the rows that describe the day you're planning and ignore the ones that don't.

Nothing here ranks one above another, and plenty of people carry two of the three. A reservoir for volume plus a single flask you can actually look at answers most of these rows at once, at the cost of one more thing to clean.
Why the hose is the whole argument
The advice every land manager gives about hot weather is some version of the same sentence. The Park Service tells Grand Canyon hikers to sip water regularly throughout the hike even if they don't feel thirsty, and its general heat guidance says to drink before you feel thirsty. That is genuinely good advice and almost nobody follows it, because thirst is the only reminder most of us have and it arrives late.
A reservoir deletes the cost of following it. The valve is already next to your face, so drinking stops being a decision or a stop or a rummage through a side pocket you can't reach without dropping a shoulder strap. Your hand does it while your legs keep going. Ten small sips an hour is a completely different hydration strategy from two big stops, and the format is most of what decides which one you end up with.
The cost is that you stop knowing anything. A reservoir gives you no feedback at all until the moment it gives you air, and by then you're a few miles from wherever you planned to refill. Flasks have the opposite failure mode: you always know, because the thing in your hand is visibly half full and light. On a well-watered trail that hardly matters. On a dry ridge in August, it's what you'll be thinking about all day.

Which one suits the day you're having
These are the conditions where one format is clearly the better tool. Most hikers meet both kinds of day in the same year, so this isn't a choice you make once.
A reservoir is the right call when
- The day is long and hot, and you want water going in without having to think about it.
- You're carrying more than about a liter and a half, and you'd rather it sat flat against your back than swung around in a side pocket.
- Water is scarce enough that you'll fill once at the trailhead and not see a source again.
- You're on rolling ground and stopping every twenty minutes would break a rhythm you want to keep.
- You're hiking with someone who forgets to drink, and you'd like to remove their excuse.
Flasks are the right call when
- You'll refill often, at a creek every couple of miles or a route with spigots on it.
- You need to know precisely what's left, because the next reliable water is a question mark.
- You're running, or moving fast enough that a half-full hard bottle sloshing behind you becomes maddening.
- It's below freezing and you'd rather insulate two small things than nurse a hose that wants to ice up.
- You want plain water in one and an electrolyte mix in the other, without committing your whole supply to either.
Where each one fails
Cold is the reservoir's worst condition, and it fails from the hose inward. The thin column of water in the tube is the first thing to freeze, and once it does, two liters of perfectly liquid water on your back are unreachable. Washington Trails Association's winter advice is the practical set: blow back into the tube after every sip so the water returns to the reservoir, insulate the tube in a cold-weather sleeve or run it inside your coat, and keep the reservoir close to your body so it takes some of your warmth. Their last point is the one worth taking seriously: in winter, don't rely on a reservoir alone. Carry a second source.
Refilling is the other place a reservoir quietly costs you. The pack has to come off, the sleeve has to come out, and anything packed against it comes out too. That's fine once. It's a genuine tax on a route where you'd otherwise top off at every stream, and it's the reason people who hike near water often drift toward flasks without ever making a decision about it.
Treatment stacks on top of that. Water from lakes and streams needs handling before you drink it, whatever you carry it in. Shenandoah National Park's instruction is to boil it for at least two minutes, use a chemical treatment, or run it through a portable filter. Getting treated water into a wide-mouth flask is trivial. Getting it into a reservoir usually means one more container in the sequence, or a filter plumbed inline on the hose.
Flasks fail differently and more gently. They run out sooner because they hold less, and the valves get gummy if you don't rinse them. A flask carried loose in a pack rather than a vest pocket is no easier to reach than a bottle, which removes most of the reason to own one. Leaks are worth thinking about before they happen. A flask empties down your front and you deal with it. A reservoir empties into everything you packed, and if your spare layer was in there, that's a real problem.
How to clean a hydration reservoir, and keep it that way
This is the maintenance flasks mostly spare you, and skipping it is how a reservoir ends up in the trash. None of it takes long if it happens on schedule.
After every hike
- Empty and rinse it out, hose and valve includedHydraPak's own guidance is to rinse and dry after every use
- Hang it open, upside down, until it's bone dry insideTrapped moisture in a dark bag is what causes the trouble
- Pull the bite valve off and rinse it separately
Every few weeks, or after anything but plain water
- Wash with mild soap and warm water, using a brush that reaches the corners
- Or drop in a cleaning tablet and leave it 15 to 30 minutes
- Check whether yours is dishwasher safe before you try itHydraPak says its reservoirs go on the top shelf, fully reversed. Not every brand agrees.
Before it goes in a drawer
- Dry it completely, 24 hours or more, with the opening propped
- Store it with the cap off so air keeps moving through it
- Some people keep theirs in the freezer between tripsNothing grows at that temperature. It works, and it costs you a shelf.
On the trail
- Treat water before it goes in, not afterBoil at least two minutes, treat chemically, or filter it

Whether a reservoir works for you is partly a pack decision. Does it have a proper sleeve, is the hose port somewhere useful, and do the shoulder straps give you anywhere to clip a valve? The daypack guide covers all three.
Common questions
Which holds more, a bladder or soft flasks?
A reservoir, comfortably. Soft flasks are usually around 500 mL each, so a vest with two on the front carries a liter. Reservoirs are where the two- and three-liter capacities live, which is why they dominate on long hot days with nothing to refill from. If you need volume and access at once, the common answer is a reservoir plus one flask.
Do soft flasks work with a normal backpack, or do I need a vest?
They work best with something that has front pockets, because the advantage is reaching them without stopping. In a regular daypack a flask ends up in a side pocket or inside the bag, where it has no real advantage over a hard bottle and is more fragile. If you're carrying a conventional pack, the honest choice is between a reservoir and bottles.
How do I stop a hydration bladder tasting of plastic?
Most of that fades after a few uses and a proper wash. What doesn't fade is the taste of something growing in it, which is a different problem and means it wasn't dried. Wash it with mild soap and a brush or a cleaning tablet, rinse thoroughly, then dry it fully inside and out before you put it away.
Can I put an electrolyte drink in a reservoir?
You can, and you'll regret it at the sink. Sugar coats the inside of the bag and the whole length of the hose, and a rinse won't get it out. If you want a mix, put it in a flask or a bottle you can scrub in ten seconds and keep the reservoir on plain water.
How much water should I carry on a day hike?
Plan around roughly a quart an hour in heat. That's Shenandoah National Park's figure for the average person on a hot day. Add margin for the sections with no water on them. Grand Canyon hikers can lose one or two quarts an hour, so desert numbers run higher. Check where the sources are on your route before you decide what to carry, because that changes the answer more than the format does.
Do I still need to treat water I refill from a stream?
Yes. Clear running water can still carry parasites and bacteria. Shenandoah National Park's instruction for backcountry sources is to boil for at least two minutes, use a chemical treatment, or filter it. That applies whether it's going into a reservoir, a flask, or a bottle.
