
Hydration vest vs backpack
A vest wraps a small load around your ribs and keeps the water where your hands already are. A pack carries more and hands most of the weight down to your hips. Which one you want depends on how much you're carrying. The water is the smallest part of that.

Both of these carry water, a jacket and some food, and either one will get you around a five-mile loop without complaint. The difference shows up at the edges, when the load gets heavy or when you start moving fast, and by then you've already bought one of them.
The short version is about hip belts. A hydration vest doesn't have one, so everything you put in it rides on your shoulders and around your ribcage. That's why it's sized by your chest, and why it stops being pleasant a long way below its liter rating. A hiking pack does have one, plus something stiff behind it, so it can take the load off your shoulders and set it on your pelvis, where your legs are. Almost everything else about the two follows from that. The water is a detail.
Which one, before any of the detail
If you only want the answer, it's in one of these two lists. The rest of the page is the reasoning behind them.
Take the vest when
- You'll be running, or moving fast enough that a pack would start bouncing.
- You're out for a few hours rather than a day, and the whole kit is water, food, a shell and a phone.
- You want to drink and eat without stopping or taking anything off.
- The trail is runnable and you'd rather be cool than carry more.
- The total load, water included, is light enough that your shoulders won't notice it by hour three.
Take the pack when
- You're carrying the full ten essentials rather than a fast subset of them.
- Most of what you carry is clothing you'll put on and take off, which is what a cold day looks like.
- You're out for a full day, or a night, where the regulations set the volume as much as you do.
- There's a long gap between water sources and you need to carry three or four liters through it.
- You want the weight off your shoulders, because that's what hurts at hour six.

Where the weight sits
A hiking pack moves weight off the soft parts of you and onto the hard ones. A frame or a framesheet keeps the load from collapsing into your back, and the hip belt rides on the crest of your pelvis so your legs hold it up instead of your shoulders. The Washington Trails Association puts the transfer at around 80 percent of the pack's weight when the thing fits properly.
How much a belt really moves depends on what you're measuring, though, and that's worth knowing before you treat 80 percent as a promise. A 2018 study in Applied Bionics and Biomechanics, summarizing earlier work by Lafiandra and Harman, describes about a third of the vertical force exerted on the spine being transferred by a hip belt. The two figures don't contradict each other. One describes what your shoulders stop feeling, the other describes force inside your spine, and the second is the smaller and more literal of the pair.
The same study also tested belt tension. Across loads from 15 to 25 kg it found no statistically significant difference in how its nine subjects walked between a belt tensioned at 30 N and one cranked to 120 N. That's nine people, and it measured gait rather than comfort, so don't stretch it far. But cranking the belt down changed less about how they moved than you'd expect.
A vest does none of this. There's no belt and usually nothing stiff at all. The straps wrap around your ribcage instead of hanging off your shoulders, which is why it's sized by chest circumference. Treeline Review's guidance is that chest measurement is the right basis for anything without a hip belt, whereas a pack is sized by torso length: the distance from the bony vertebra where your shoulders meet your neck down to the point on your spine level with the top of your hip bones. They get measured differently because they hold on to you in different places.
That's what trips people up. On a vest, every ounce stays on your shoulders and ribs, which is fine at four or five pounds and much less fine at fifteen, whatever the volume on the label says it will hold.
How to make either one sit still
Most of what gets blamed on the design is a fitting problem. In order, and it's the same order for both:

Measure the thing that gets fitted
Chest circumference for a vest, torso length for a pack. Torso length runs from the vertebra at the base of your neck down to the vertebra level with the top of your hip bones, and it's much easier if someone else holds the tape. Then read that brand's chart instead of assuming your shirt size carries over.

Put the heavy things where the design expects them
In a pack, the dense things go against your back at roughly shoulder-blade height. The Appalachian Mountain Club's packing guidance is that with the pack's mass sitting there, you can transfer most of its weight onto your legs. In a vest, the flasks go in the front pockets first. Treeline Review's point is that a heavily loaded back with an empty front is one of the most common causes of bounce.

Fill it, or it will misbehave
Treeline Review's warning about reservoirs is that the sloshing gets worse the more you drink, because a part-empty bladder gives the water room to move. Overloading has its own version: stuff six liters of heavy gear into a four-liter vest, they say, and it may bounce, feel sloppy and stretch out over time. Adventure Alan says the same about larger running packs, which have to be filled or they feel sloppy to run in.

On a pack, set the belt before the straps
Hip belt onto the crest of your pelvis and done up first, then the shoulder straps, then the load lifters. If you tension the shoulders first, the belt ends up somewhere around your waist and carries nothing.
Past snug, tighter may buy you less than you think. That 2018 study found no significant difference in how its subjects walked between a moderate belt tension and a very high one.

On a vest, cinch the chest and the sides together
Treeline Review's instruction is to cinch the vest snugly against your body with the straps tightened at both the chest and the sides. A vest that's loose in the ribs will bounce no matter what you do at the sternum.

Test it loaded, at the pace you will use
An empty vest in a store tells you nothing. Treeline Review says you notice the difference between a vest that fits and one that doesn't inside the first mile, once you've got two liters of water in it. So load it and move at your real pace before you commit.

Where the two designs meet in the middle
There's a third category that sits between the two. A vest-harness pack takes the wrap-around front of a running vest and bolts it to a real pack body behind. Adventure Alan draws the line this way: a true vest sits higher, has no hip belt, and wraps wide around the side of your torso. A running backpack sits a bit lower, connects a vest harness to the main body with adjustable webbing, tends to have more padding on the back panel, and includes a hip belt of some kind.
That's the shape most fastpacking runs on, and the sizing follows from it: roughly 10 to 20 liters for fair-weather day trips, 20 to 30 liters once you're carrying extra layers or sleeping out. It buys you the front pockets and the bounce-free fit without capping you at a few hours. What it usually doesn't buy is a belt like a hiking pack's. The one on a running backpack is often a strip of nylon webbing, which Adventure Alan lists as a drawback on several of them. It's there to keep the pack from swaying rather than to hand 80 percent of the load to your pelvis, so the weight ceiling still comes mostly from the vest side of the design.
Which puts the choice back where it started, on the load. Weigh what you intend to carry, water included, then pick the system built for that number. Buying the volume you wish you needed is how people end up with a 12-liter vest carrying a day's worth of gear, and sore shoulders to show for it.

Questions people actually ask
Can I just use a hydration vest for hiking?
Yes, for short and fast days. A vest handles water, snacks, a shell and a phone perfectly well, and the front pockets beat a pack for eating and drinking on the move. It runs out of room and out of shoulder comfort once you're carrying a full day's layers, food and spare water.
How much weight can a hydration vest carry?
Less than its volume suggests. With no hip belt to hand the load to, every ounce stays on your shoulders and ribs. The liter rating measures space rather than comfort, so weigh what you intend to carry before you pick a size.
Do I need a hip belt on a day pack?
On a small pack carrying a few pounds, the belt is mostly there to stop the pack swinging. It starts to matter once the load is heavy enough that your shoulders notice. That's the point where WTA's 80 percent transfer becomes the difference between a comfortable day and a sore one.
Can I run in a hiking backpack?
You can, but a pack without a vest harness moves independently of your torso as soon as you do, and no amount of strap tightening fully fixes it. If running is a regular part of the plan rather than an occasional jog down a hill, that's the case for a vest or a vest-harness pack.
Is a hydration vest hotter than a backpack?
They're hot in different places, and we haven't seen a study measuring the difference. A vest covers more of your front and sides in fabric. A pack covers your back, though many have a ventilated panel to hold it off you. Which one feels worse depends mostly on how much you sweat and where.
What size hydration vest should I buy?
Size by chest circumference against the maker's own chart, then choose volume by how long you're out. Treeline Review's tiers are a good starting frame: 3 to 8 liters for short runs, 8 to 12 for a do-it-all vest, 15 and up for multi-day.
Can a vest handle an overnight?
A 15-liter-plus vest-harness pack can, if your kit is genuinely light. A conventional running vest can't, and in a lot of places the regulations settle it for you. Rocky Mountain National Park, for one, requires overnight wilderness backpackers to keep food, scented items and garbage in a hard-sided lockable bear canister, and a canister needs a pack body to go in. Food storage rules are set park by park and do get revised, so check the page for wherever you're going before you plan around a vest.
