What do the shoulder straps on a backpack do?

Shoulder straps, together called the shoulder harness, are the two padded straps that go over your shoulders. On a pack with a hipbelt they hold the load close and steady rather than carrying it: REI's guidance is that 80 percent or more of the weight should sit on your hips.

Why shouldn't shoulder straps carry the weight?

Because your shoulders, neck and upper back are poorly built for it and your hips are not. REI's fit guide says the straps should wrap closely around your shoulders without carrying significant weight, and that if they are, you put undue stress on those muscles. On a framed pack with a hipbelt, 80 percent or more of the load belongs on your hips.

What the straps do instead is hold the pack against your back so it moves with you. The Washington Trails Association puts it simply: tightening them pulls the pack closer to your body and keeps it from pressing down on your shoulders.

How do you know the shoulder straps fit?

Look at where they attach at the top. REI says the anchor points should sit 1 to 2 inches below the top of your shoulders, roughly level with the top of your shoulder blades. If they are well off that, either the hipbelt is at the wrong height or the pack's torso length is wrong for you, and no amount of strap tension fixes either.

Then check the order. Fasten and tighten the hipbelt first, pull the shoulder straps down and back until they wrap your shoulders without a gap, then set the load lifters and the sternum strap.

Do women's packs have different shoulder straps?

Usually, yes. REI notes that the hipbelts and shoulder straps on women-specific packs tend to be contoured to accommodate wider hips and breasts, and its daypack guide adds that the straps are designed for a narrower frame.

Those are responses to average body shape rather than rules, so try both versions. REI also points out that women's packs often suit younger hikers, shorter people and anyone with narrow shoulders.

How is a vest harness different?

A running vest or fastpack has no frame to move weight down to your hips, so its straps have to hold the load after all. That is why they look nothing like backpack straps: wide, soft panels that wrap the front of the ribs, with two or more adjustment points down the chest and flask pockets sitting on top.

It works because the load is small. The wide harness that lets a light fastpack run smoothly is the wrong design for a heavy multi-day load, which is what a frame and hipbelt are for.

What this means when you're choosing

  • Anchor points that land 1 to 2 inches below the top of your shoulders once the hipbelt sits on your hip bones
  • Straps shaped to clear your chest, which is what a curved or women-specific harness does
  • Pockets or loops on the straps if you want a bottle, phone or bite valve within reach
  • A vest-style harness only for light loads you intend to move fast with

The common mistake

Tightening the shoulder straps to take the weight

It feels secure, and it moves the load off your hips onto your neck and upper back, which is where the aches start later in the day. Tighten the hipbelt first, then bring the shoulder straps in only until they wrap your shoulders. If your shoulders ache early, look at the belt and the torso length before the straps.

How tight should backpack shoulder straps be?

Close enough to wrap your shoulders with no gap, and loose enough that the hipbelt is still carrying the load. If loosening them makes the pack sag off your hips, the belt is too loose or sitting in the wrong place.

Is it normal to tighten the shoulder straps partway through a hike?

Yes. REI describes it as a common way to manage fatigue: tighten the shoulder straps and loosen the hipbelt for a while, then reverse it later. The aim is to move pressure around, not to keep the load on your shoulders.

Load lifters

Load lifters are the short straps running from the top of the shoulder harness back to the top of the pack frame. They pull the load in towards your body so it stops levering you backwards. They don't carry weight themselves.

Hipbelt

The hipbelt is the padded belt that wraps your pelvis and transfers pack weight onto your hips instead of your shoulders. On a loaded backpacking pack it should be carrying most of the weight, often quoted as 70 to 80 percent.

Framesheet

A framesheet is a sheet of stiff plastic in a pack's backpanel that spreads the load across your back and stops contents from poking through. It's lighter than a frame but gives you less vertical support.

Internal frame

An internal frame is the structure hidden inside a pack's backpanel, usually one or two aluminum stays or a perimeter hoop, that carries weight from the shoulders down to the hipbelt. It's what makes a pack load-bearing.

Suspended mesh backpanel

A suspended mesh backpanel stretches a taut mesh across a curved frame so the pack body sits away from your back with an air gap behind it. It's the coolest-running backpanel design and the one that holds the load furthest from your spine.

Pack lid

The lid, or brain, is the padded flap that covers the top of a top-loading pack, usually carrying one or two zipped pockets. A floating lid is one attached by adjustable straps so it can rise as the pack is overfilled.

Extension collar

An extension collar is the fabric tube above a top-loading pack's main compartment, closed by a drawcord. Rolled down it does nothing; pulled up it adds capacity, typically 5 to 10 liters beyond the pack's quoted volume.

Panel loader

A panel loader opens with a zip that runs around the front of the pack, so the whole compartment folds open like a suitcase. The alternative is a top loader, which you access through an opening at the top.

Shove-it pocket

A shove-it pocket is the open-topped stretch panel across the front of a pack. It has no zip, so you can push a wet jacket or a map into it one-handed while walking, and pull it out just as fast.

Load rating

A load rating is the weight a pack maker says a pack carries well, usually given as a range in pounds. It describes the frame and hipbelt rather than the fabric, so exceeding it doesn't break the pack, it just moves the weight to your shoulders.

Sternum strap

A sternum strap is the short adjustable strap that clips across your chest between a pack's two shoulder straps. It holds them at the right width so they stop sliding outward, and it steadies the load. It carries no weight, and it belongs roughly an inch below your collarbones.

Compression straps

Compression straps are the adjustable webbing straps on the sides of a backpack that cinch the pack body in around whatever is inside. Pulled snug, they stop a part-full load shifting as you walk, and on many packs they double as a way to strap long gear to the outside.
