Trail running shoes vs hiking boots
These days most long-distance hikers walk in shoes built for running. The usual arguments for boots are weaker than they sound, but the conditions where a boot still wins are real, and they're worth knowing before you spend the money.
This argument never really ends online, and most of it gets fought on the wrong ground. Neither format is safer or faster by itself. What decides it is the weight on your back and what you're walking on, plus how many miles you're asking your feet to cover. You can check all of that before you leave the house.
The sport has already moved. Of the 2019 Appalachian Trail thru-hikers who answered one survey, about three-quarters were walking in trail runners and fewer than one in ten in boots. The standard reasons for boots either don't hold up, or only hold up in specific conditions, and those conditions are a lot narrower than the wall of boots in a gear store makes them look.
The short answer
Almost nobody needs one pair for everything. Pick for the hike in front of you instead of for the rest of your life, and the conditions have usually decided it already.
Trail runners cover most hiking
- You're carrying a day pack or a light overnight load rather than forty pounds.
- The ground is a trail: dirt, roots, rock, the occasional creek.
- You're doing big miles, and weight on your feet adds up step after step.
- Your feet run hot, or the hike is somewhere warm and dry.
- You want footwear that needs next to no breaking in.
Boots earn their place when
- The pack is heavy enough to change how you balance.
- You're on scree, talus or off-trail ground where your foot keeps landing on edges.
- It's below freezing, or the snow is deep enough to come over a low collar.
- You have a history of ankle or foot trouble and you know what a stiffer sole does for you.
- You want one pair to last years rather than a season.

A pound on your feet is said to cost five on your back. It's a rule of thumb that gets repeated a lot.
Head to head, where they differ
Ignore the marketing categories for a minute. These are the places where the two formats behave differently, and you'll feel most of them inside the first mile.

Weights are the Appalachian Mountain Club's. The 300-to-500-mile figure comes from Treeline Review's testers hiking in them, and the AMC's own range runs higher, at 500 to 750. Treat both as ballpark: rocky trail chews through a shoe far faster than smooth dirt does.
The words in that table, defined
- Torsional rigidity
- How much the sole resists twisting along its length. It's what stops your foot rolling with the rock when you land on an edge, and the AMC's position is that it matters more for stability than the height of the cuff does.
- Shank
- A stiffening insert in the sole of a boot, usually nylon or steel, that stops it bending under the arch. It's what makes a boot feel like a platform instead of a slipper, and it's most of the reason a boot carries a heavy pack better.
- Rock plate
- A thin stiff layer between midsole and outsole that stops sharp rock bruising the bottom of your foot. Plenty of trail running shoes don't have one, which you find out on your first properly rocky descent.
- Midsole
- The foam between your foot and the ground. It does the cushioning, and it's the part that dies first. A shoe can look perfectly healthy after the foam has stopped springing back.
- Stack height
- How much shoe sits under your heel and forefoot, in millimeters. More stack means more cushioning and a little less feel for what you're standing on.
- Heel-to-toe drop
- The height difference between the heel and the forefoot. Traditional boots sit high, usually somewhere around 8 to 12 mm, and trail shoes run anywhere from zero up. Change it abruptly and your calves and Achilles will let you know.
- Lugs
- The rubber knobs on the outsole. Deep, widely spaced lugs bite into mud and shed it; shallower ones grip dry rock and roll along faster.
- Waterproof membrane
- A thin film, Gore-Tex being the best known, that blocks liquid water while letting some sweat vapor out. It works until water comes over the collar, at which point it's the thing keeping the water in.
The ankle support argument
This is the reason most people give for buying boots, and it's the one with the least behind it. The Appalachian Mountain Club's position is that a high ankle collar is not a primary source of ankle stability. It helps, they say. It just isn't what does the work. What resists the roll is torsional rigidity, the sole refusing to twist when your foot lands on the edge of a rock, and you can buy that in a low shoe.
The research doesn't come from hiking. Most of it comes from basketball, where high-tops have been standard for decades and there's enough injury data to look at. A 2014 paper in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research lays out the split: laboratory work finds high-tops restrict how far and how fast the ankle rolls inward, while the epidemiological studies haven't found a clear difference in sprain rates between high-top and low-top shoes.
None of which means boots do nothing. A stiff, supportive boot changes how your foot loads on broken ground, and if you have a history of ankle injuries, the person who knows what helps you is you rather than a study of basketball players. It does mean that buying boots for the ankle support is a weaker reason than it sounds, and a bad reason to stay in a pair you otherwise dislike.
Cam Honan, who has more than 10,000 miles in boots and many times that in lighter footwear, argues the reverse: a lower shoe puts you closer to the ground and lets the ankle do its own work. That's an opinion backed by a lot of miles rather than by a study. Weigh it against what your own feet do on rough ground.
A high ankle collar is not a primary source of ankle stability, though it definitely helps.
Wet ground is where they really split
Mesh shoes aren't worse in the wet, which surprises people. They're worse at staying dry and much better at getting dry, and past the first couple of hours the drying is the part you notice.
A waterproof membrane keeps out drizzle, dew and shallow puddles, which is genuinely pleasant on a cold day. What it can't do is keep out water that arrives over the collar, from a creek crossing, a boot-deep bog, or rain running down your leg. After that the membrane is on the wrong side of the problem, holding the water against your foot. Treeline Review's testers found a soaked waterproof shoe took a full day to dry out. A mesh shoe drains while you keep walking.
Wet feet are also how you get blisters. A 2024 study in the International Wound Journal followed 86 hikers who had covered an average of about 456 km and found roughly 62% of them developed blisters, with higher skin hydration on the foot associated with getting them, and wet socks at the end of the day showing up as a risk factor. One study of one group doesn't prove your shoes caused anything, but it points the same direction as the advice the Park Service gives: wicking wool or synthetic socks, a spare pair, and moleskin in the kit.
There's a trail-impact argument too, and it's why I'd rather be in shoes I don't mind soaking. Leave No Trace asks you to walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when it's wet or muddy. Everyone who steps around a puddle instead of through it widens the trail a little, and enough people doing that turns one path into a braid of parallel ones. The rule is much easier to follow in shoes you've already written off as wet.

Common questions
Can I use trail running shoes for backpacking?
Yes, and plenty of people do. It comes down to the weight on your back: the lighter the pack, the less you need a stiff sole under it. Once you're carrying a heavy multi-day load, a boot's shank and thicker midsole start to earn their keep.
Do I need waterproof shoes for hiking?
Usually not, and the label promises more than it delivers. Waterproof uppers help in cold, wet, shallow conditions and hurt in hot dry ones, where they trap sweat against your foot. In warm weather most long-distance hikers deliberately pick non-waterproof shoes so that wet feet dry out instead of staying wet all day.
Are hiking boots better for beginners?
Not automatically. Treeline Review does point at shorter trips, newer hikers and technical terrain as the case for something burlier than a trail runner, but what they recommend there is a hiking shoe rather than a boot. It keeps the low cut and adds a more protective midsole and a tougher upper. That protection is forgiving while you're still learning where to put your feet, and you don't pay for it in weight. The bigger beginner mistake is footwear that doesn't fit.
How long do trail running shoes last for hiking?
Roughly 300 to 500 miles by Treeline Review's reckoning, against 600 to 900 for a more durable hiking shoe, and considerably more for a boot. Watch the midsole rather than the tread. The foam goes flat while the shoe still looks fine from the outside.
What does the National Park Service actually recommend?
Its Hike Smart guidance sets a floor rather than picking a format. It calls for sturdy, rubber-soled hiking boots with ankle support on dirt and gravel trails, and names heels, open-toed shoes and flip-flops as what not to hike in. Read that as a minimum: real footwear with real traction. Plenty of park guidance still assumes boots, which is worth knowing when you're reading a trail page.
Should I size up?
Probably, a little. The AMC's advice is not to be afraid of going half a size up, because feet expand over a long day. Toes slamming into the front of the shoe on a long descent is a common footwear complaint, and it's a sizing problem rather than a boots-versus-shoes one.
