What is a quick disconnect on a hydration reservoir?

A quick disconnect is the two-part coupling in a hydration hose that lets you unclip the tube from the reservoir without threading it back through your pack. Both halves usually self-seal, so you can pull the bag out to refill and neither end drips.

What problem does a quick disconnect solve?

Refilling. A reservoir's hose runs out of the pack through a port and clips to a shoulder strap, and without a coupling the only way to get the bag out is to unclip the tube and drag its full length back through the pack, then feed it all the way forward again once the bag is back in. That is a five-minute job in the middle of a hot afternoon, and the honest consequence is that people skip refills they should have taken.

With a coupling you press or twist, the tube comes off in your hand, the bag lifts straight out of its sleeve, and the hose stays exactly where it was routed. HydraPak describes the point of its own version plainly: disconnect the drink tube and remove the reservoir from the pack for convenient refilling, with a shut off valve stopping the leak.

Where does the coupling sit on the hose?

Either right at the top of the reservoir or partway down the tube, and the difference shows up at the water source. Platypus calls its placement a high mount quick-disconnect, which means the join sits near the top of the bag where your hand already is when you reach into the sleeve. A coupling further down the hose works identically but leaves you fishing for it against your back.

Both halves normally self-seal, which is the detail that makes the feature usable rather than annoying. The reservoir side closes so a full bag does not pour out of its own port, and the hose side holds the water already in the tube. A coupling that only seals one half turns every refill into a wet leg.

Why will another brand's hose not fit?

Because the fitting is proprietary even where the tubing is not. HydraPak calls its system Plug-N-Play, Source uses Source Quick Connect and Quick Mate Technology, and Platypus, CamelBak and Osprey each have their own geometry. Several of them run tubing at the same quarter inch bore, so a hose from one brand will physically slide onto another brand's barb and still have no way to latch or seal at the coupling.

This is the single reason third-party hoses are a bad bet, and it is worth knowing before a part fails on a trip rather than after. Buy the replacement tube kit your reservoir's maker sells. HydraPak's insulated HydraFusion tube, for instance, ships as a kit with the tube, the Comet valve and its own connector, so the whole hose is replaced as one matched assembly rather than mixed with parts from somewhere else.

Which to pick: They solve different problems and good reservoirs carry both. The disconnect is for refilling, the shutoff is for storage and transport.

Assuming a matching tube diameter means a matching fitting

Plenty of reservoirs run a quarter inch tube, so a hose from another brand slides on and looks right. The coupling is the part that has to match, and it is proprietary to each maker. Buy the tube kit sold for your own reservoir, and keep the old hose as the spare it now is.

Common questions

Do I need a quick disconnect on a hydration reservoir?

Only if you refill mid-hike. If you fill once at the trailhead and drink it down, the coupling adds a join that can theoretically fail. If you top up from streams or taps through the day, it is the difference between a thirty second refill and a five minute one.

Will a quick disconnect leak?

The coupling itself is a rare failure point, and both halves normally self-seal when you part them. What does leak is a join that was not pushed fully home, so listen for the click and give the tube a light tug before the pack goes back on.

Can I add a quick disconnect to a reservoir that has none?

Usually only by buying that maker's own replacement tube kit, since the reservoir side of the coupling is built into the bag's exit port. Universal aftermarket couplings exist, and they are the part most likely to weep on a system that was not designed around them.

Canister stove

A canister stove screws directly onto a sealed cartridge of pressurised isobutane-propane. It lights instantly, simmers well and needs no priming, which is why it's the default backpacking stove almost everywhere fuel canisters are sold.

Integrated stove system

An integrated stove system pairs a burner with a matched pot that locks on, usually with a heat exchanger ring on the base. It boils water faster and uses less fuel than a separate stove and pot, at the cost of versatility.

Isobutane-propane blend

Isobutane-propane is the fuel blend inside standard threaded backpacking canisters, usually around 80 percent isobutane and 20 percent propane. Propane provides cold-weather pressure, isobutane provides most of the burn time.

Hollow fiber filter

A hollow fiber filter passes water through a bundle of tiny straw-like tubes whose walls are perforated with pores around 0.1 to 0.2 microns. It's the technology in almost every modern backpacking filter, and a single freeze can destroy it invisibly.

Micron rating

A micron rating states the largest particle a filter lets through, in microns. Backpacking filters are typically rated 0.1 or 0.2 microns, which stops bacteria and protozoa. Viruses are around 0.02 microns and pass straight through.

Flow rate

Flow rate is how fast a filter delivers clean water, usually quoted in liters per minute. The advertised figure is measured on a brand-new filter with clean water, and real flow drops as the element clogs with sediment.

Backflushing

Backflushing pushes clean water backwards through a filter to dislodge the sediment clogging its pores. It's routine maintenance on a hollow fiber filter, and it's the difference between one that lasts a season and one that lasts years.

Purifier vs filter

A filter physically strains out bacteria and protozoa. A purifier also deals with viruses, which are too small to strain, using chemistry, UV light or a much finer element. Most backcountry hiking needs a filter; international travel often needs a purifier.

Soft flask

A soft flask is a collapsible bottle, usually 250 to 750 ml, carried in the front pockets of a hydration vest. It shrinks as you drink so it doesn't slosh, and you can see exactly how much water you have left.

Hydration bladder

A hydration bladder is a flat water reservoir carried inside a pack with a drinking hose routed over the shoulder. It holds 1.5 to 3 liters, packs flat against your back and lets you drink without stopping or taking the pack off.

Bite valve

A bite valve is the silicone mouthpiece on the end of a hydration reservoir's drink tube. It stays shut until your teeth compress a slit in it, then self-seals when you let go, so water only flows while you are drinking.

Hard-anodized aluminum

Hard-anodized aluminum is aluminum whose surface has been grown into a thick, very hard oxide layer by an electrochemical bath. In cookware it gives a pot that spreads heat far more evenly than titanium and resists scratching far better than bare aluminum.
