What is a backpacking quilt?
It's a sleeping bag with the back, the hood and the zipper taken off. The part that's missing was doing very little — but only if the pad underneath you is doing its half of the job.
A backpacking quilt is a sleeping bag with the back, the hood and the full-length zipper removed. What's left is a rectangle of down-filled fabric, closed into a pocket at the foot end, with a pair of thin elastic straps that run under your sleeping pad and hold the thing in place. You don't get into it. You lie on the pad and pull it over you, the way you use a duvet at home.
Written down like that it sounds like paying full price for three quarters of a sleeping bag. The argument for it is that the quarter you lost was barely working — the down underneath a sleeping bag spends the whole night crushed flat under your body, and crushed down doesn't insulate. Whether that argument holds for you comes down almost entirely to what you're lying on.

Why the underside is missing
Down doesn't insulate. Air insulates, and down's job is to hold a thick layer of it still, in millions of pockets too small for it to circulate and carry your heat away. Loft — how tall the insulation stands — is the whole game. Squash the loft and you have expensive fabric.
Now think about where your body weight goes. Everything under your shoulders, hips and heels is compressed to a few millimetres for eight hours. Katabatic Gear, who have been making quilts for years, put the design decision plainly: on a quilt "the otherwise compressed insulation on the bottom is removed, reducing weight and preserving only the down that's actually helping you stay warm." Adventure Alan reaches the same place from the other direction — down compressed by the weight of your body is, in his words, "relatively ineffective."
So a quilt isn't gambling that you won't lose heat downwards. It's recognising that the sleeping bag was never really stopping that either. Backpacking Light's survey of the category describes quilts as "removing insulation beneath your body – relying instead on your sleeping pad for bottom-side warmth," which is the honest framing: the job didn't disappear, it moved. It moved to a piece of gear that was already there and that you may or may not have bought for the temperatures you actually camp in.
The parts, and what they're called
- Top quilt
- The same object, named to distinguish it from an under quilt — the separate piece that hangs beneath a hammock, where there is no pad to insulate you.
- Footbox
- The closed pocket at the foot end. A sewn footbox is permanently shut, warmer and lighter. A zippered one opens the quilt out flat into a blanket for hot nights, at the cost of some weight and a seam that can leak heat.
- Pad attachment
- Elastic straps or cords that pass under your pad and clip to the quilt's edges, so the quilt travels with the pad instead of sliding off it when you roll over.
- Draft collar
- A stuffed tube across the neck end that seals the gap at your shoulders. It's the single feature that most separates a quilt that works below freezing from one that doesn't.
- Fill power
- The volume one ounce of down occupies when fully lofted, in cubic inches — so 800 fill power lofts higher, and insulates more, per ounce than 650. It describes the quality of the down, not how much is in there.
- Fill weight
- How many ounces of down the quilt actually contains. Warmth comes from fill power and fill weight together; a high fill power with very little of it is a light quilt, not a warm one.
- Comfort rating vs limit rating
- Two different questions. Comfort is the temperature at which a standard sleeper is not shivering in a relaxed posture; limit is the colder figure where a standard sleeper is curled up and still not shivering. The same quilt can be labelled with either.
- R-value
- Your sleeping pad's resistance to heat passing through it, now measured under the ASTM F3340 standard so figures from different brands mean the same thing. Higher is warmer.
A quilt doesn't make heat. It slows down how fast you lose it — and on the side you're lying on, that was never the bag's job in the first place.
Setting one up so it doesn't leak heat at 3am
Almost every complaint about quilts is a draft complaint, and almost every draft complaint is a setup problem. The order matters more than the effort.

Match the width to your shoulders, not to the pad
A quilt has to be wide enough to drape past you on both sides and pool on the ground or the pad edge — that overhang is what seals it. Adventure Alan's rule is that the quilt must be wide enough to drape and pool at the ground on both sides of you. Too narrow and no amount of strapping will fix it.
Broad-shouldered sleepers should size up before they size warm.

Set the pad straps loose
The straps are there to keep the quilt on the pad, not to clamp it down. Cinched tight, they pull the edges flat and squash the loft exactly where you want it thickest. Leave enough slack that the fabric still has slack to tuck.

Close the footbox before you get in
If yours zips, zip it and cinch the drawcord first. Doing it once you're horizontal usually means leaving a gap you can't see and won't notice until your feet are cold.

Supply your own hood
This is the part people skip. A bag's hood is doing real work, and a quilt doesn't have one, so a warm hat — or the hood of the jacket you're already carrying — is not optional at the bottom of a quilt's range. Katabatic assumes an average sleeper wearing a set of base layers, socks included, when it assigns its ratings.

Tuck the windward edge under your hip
When you roll, the quilt lifts on the side you rolled away from. Sleeping with one edge trapped under your hip on the colder or windier side turns the most common draft into a non-event.
Who a quilt suits, and who should stay with a bag
This is a decision about how you sleep, not about how experienced you are. Plenty of people who have slept out for decades are better off in a bag.
A quilt suits you if
- You already own a pad with an R-value that matches your coldest realistic night — or you're buying one at the same time.
- You move a lot in your sleep. Backpacking Light notes quilts work well for side sleepers, fetal-position sleepers and tossers and turners, because you rotate under the quilt instead of inside a bag.
- You're chasing weight and you've already taken the easy wins elsewhere. Dropping a back panel, a hood and a metre of zipper is real grams.
- You sleep warm, or you're happy to solve a cold night by putting on the layers you already carry.
- Most of your nights are three-season, with the occasional cold one rather than a season of them.
- You want one thing that vents from stifling to open-flat blanket without you climbing out of it.
Stay with a bag if
- You sleep cold and know it. A quilt's margin for error is smaller in exactly the way that will keep you awake.
- Your pad is thin, old or unrated, and you're not replacing it. This is the one that actually gets people cold.
- Most of your nights are well below freezing. It's doable, but it needs width, a draft collar and setup discipline that a bag simply doesn't ask for.
- You want to compare two products by their labels. Bag ratings are far more often tested to a common standard than quilt ratings are.
- You cowboy camp in exposed, windy places without a tent to break the airflow.
- You want to lie down, get in, and stop thinking about it. That is a completely legitimate thing to want from a piece of gear.

Neither column is the right answer. The row that decides it for most people is the last one.
The number on the label is the least reliable thing about it
Sleeping bags have a standard. ISO 23537 replaced the older European norm in 2016, and it defines what the numbers mean: the comfort rating is based on a standard woman who isn't shivering in a relaxed posture, and the lower limit rating on a standard man curled up inside the bag and not shivering. Same bag, two numbers, roughly ten degrees apart. That is why a bag labelled 20 and a bag labelled 30 can behave identically.
Quilts sit awkwardly in that system. Backpacking Light's read is that the standard "explicitly allows for testing of hoodless sleeping bags, and by extension, quilts" — but that "the manikin would lose a lot of heat through its uncovered head, resulting in a more flawed temperature rating." So even a properly tested quilt figure is measuring something the test wasn't really built for, and in practice a lot of quilt ratings are the maker's own considered judgement rather than a lab result.
That isn't necessarily dishonest, and some makers are careful about it. Katabatic states outright that its stated ratings are comfort ratings rather than lower limits, and that they assume an average sleeper wearing base layers and socks. But it does mean two quilts both stamped "20" may not be describing the same night, which is why experienced quilt users tend to build in a buffer — Adventure Alan suggests treating the comfort range as roughly ten degrees warmer than the number in the product name.
The practical version: treat a quilt's rating as a rough band, find out whether it's a comfort or a limit figure before you compare it to anything, and pay more attention to fill weight, width and whether there's a draft collar than to the number on the tag.
What to pin down before you order one
Quilts are mostly bought online from small makers with long lead times and limited returns, so the specification is the decision. These are the questions worth answering first.
The quilt itself
- Is the temperature figure a comfort rating or a limit rating?If the maker doesn't say, assume the more optimistic one and knock ten degrees off.
- Fill weight in ounces, not just fill power
- Width, checked against your shoulders and your padWide enough to drape past you and pool on both sides.
- Sewn footbox or zippered — warmth and weight, or versatility
- Is there a draft collar? Below freezing, this is the feature that matters
- Down or synthetic, and how wet the trips you actually do tend to be
The rest of the sleep system
- Your pad's R-value, tested to ASTM F3340Pair it to the coldest night you realistically expect, not the average one.
- Pad width — the attachment straps have to reach around it
- A warm hat, or a hooded layer you're already carrying
- Dry base layers kept for sleeping and nothing else
Your own calibration
- Do you sleep cold? Be honest; it's the single biggest variable
- What's the realistic overnight low where you actually camp?
- How much margin do you want for a night that goes wrong?
Common questions
Is a quilt genuinely warmer per ounce than a sleeping bag?
For the insulation above you, yes — a quilt spends all of its down where the loft survives, and drops the back panel, hood and zipper that a bag carries. That's the design argument, and it holds. What it doesn't tell you is whether the whole system is warmer, because the pad is now carrying more of the load than it was.
Will I get drafts?
Sometimes, especially in the first few nights while you work out how you sleep in one. Most of it is fixable with three things: a quilt wide enough to pool on both sides, straps set loose rather than tight, and one edge tucked under your hip on the colder side. If you're still cold after that, the quilt is too narrow or the rating is too optimistic for you.
What R-value pad do I need with a quilt?
Enough that the pad is not the weak link — Katabatic's guidance is that the pad should at least meet the insulating capacity of the quilt. Since the ASTM F3340 standard was adopted, R-values from different brands are directly comparable, so check the figure rather than the marketing name. Whatever you'd consider adequate with a sleeping bag, treat as the floor rather than the target.
Can I use a quilt below freezing?
Yes, and plenty of people do. It asks for more of you than a bag does: enough width, a draft collar, a pad with real R-value, a hat, and dry layers kept back for sleeping. If your winter nights are frequent rather than occasional, a bag removes several ways to get it wrong for a fairly small weight penalty.
Do I have to use the pad straps?
Not always. Some people never bother and simply tuck the edges; others find the quilt on the tent floor at 2am. It depends on how much you move and how slippery your pad's fabric is. The straps weigh almost nothing, so carry them and decide on the trail.
What about a hammock?
A quilt over the top works, but the compression problem comes back in a different form — in a hammock the fabric presses your insulation flat from below and there's no pad to take over. That's what an under quilt is for: a separate piece that hangs outside the hammock, uncompressed. A top quilt alone in a hammock on a cold night is the classic way to have a bad time.
