What is an EN/ISO temperature rating?

EN/ISO is the standardised lab test that gives sleeping bags their temperature ratings. It produces several figures, and the two that matter are comfort, aimed at a standard cold sleeper, and limit, aimed at a standard warm sleeper.

What the standard replaced

Before the standard existed, a bag's rating was whatever the brand felt like printing. EN 13537, since updated as ISO 23537, replaced that with a heated mannequin in a climate chamber and a defined method, which is why ratings are broadly trustworthy now.

Comfort, limit and extreme

The test produces three numbers people care about. Comfort is the temperature at which a standard adult woman sleeps comfortably. Limit is where a standard adult man sleeps curled up but not shivering. Extreme is a survival figure for six hours without hypothermia, and it should be ignored entirely when shopping, because it describes surviving a night rather than sleeping through one.

Why the number on the label is usually the limit

Here's the catch. Most bags are named after the limit number, so a bag sold as a 20 degree bag typically has a comfort rating closer to 30. If you sleep cold, buy on the comfort number, and expect the bag on the shelf labelled for your conditions to be roughly ten degrees optimistic for you.

What the test actually does

A heated mannequin dressed in a base layer and lying on a standardised pad inside the bag, in a climate chamber. The heaters hold it at a fixed skin temperature and the machine measures how much power that takes at various air temperatures, from which the ratings are derived.

That is why the numbers are comparable at all, and also why they read as abstract. A mannequin does not sleep badly, does not have a bad hydration day, and never crawls into the bag already cold.

Why your experience differs from the number

The test assumes a pad doing its job, and a cold pad will make any bag feel ten degrees worse. It assumes a base layer, so sleeping in nothing changes the result. It assumes an adult of standard build, so a small, lean or older sleeper will typically feel colder than the rating implies.

Then there are the things nobody accounts for: going to bed dehydrated, going to bed on a large calorie deficit, a draughty pitch, or a damp bag that has lost some loft. Treat the rating as a laboratory comparison between bags, not a promise about a specific night.

The common mistake

Buying on the number in the product name

The name is usually the limit rating. Treating it as the temperature you'll be comfortable at is how people end up wearing every layer they own inside a bag rated for the conditions they're in.

Common questions

Should I buy on the comfort rating or the limit rating?

Comfort, unless you know you sleep warm. The limit figure describes not shivering, which is a lower bar than sleeping well, and it's the one most product names are based on.

Do quilts have EN/ISO ratings?

Mostly not, because the test needs a closed bag around the mannequin and a quilt has no back. Quilt makers publish their own ratings, so compare quilts to quilts and treat a quilt rating as a little more optimistic.

R-value

R-value measures how well a sleeping pad resists heat escaping into the ground. Higher numbers insulate better, and since 2020 every brand has tested to the same standard, so the numbers finally compare across brands.

Fill power

Fill power measures the loft of down: how many cubic inches one ounce expands to fill. Higher fill power traps more air per unit of weight, so an 850 fill bag is lighter and more compressible than a 650 fill bag of the same warmth.

Fill weight

Fill weight is how much insulation is actually inside a sleeping bag or jacket, given in grams or ounces. Paired with fill power it tells you what a bag's warmth is made of, and it's the number brands are least keen to publish.

Hydrophobic down

Hydrophobic down is down treated with a water-repellent finish so it resists moisture, dries faster and keeps some loft when damp. It delays the failure that untreated down suffers when wet, but it doesn't make down behave like synthetic.

Mummy bag

A mummy bag is a sleeping bag cut wide at the shoulders and narrow at the feet, with a hood that closes around your head. The taper leaves less air inside for your body to heat, which is why it is the warmest shape for its weight.

Draft collar

A draft collar is an insulated tube around the neck opening of a sleeping bag, cinched to seal the gap at your shoulders. It stops warm air pumping out of the top of the bag every time you move, which is where most heat is lost.

Baffle

A baffle is a fabric wall sewn between the inner and outer shells of a down bag to hold the down in place. Without baffles the down migrates to the low side and leaves cold spots where there's no insulation at all.

Footbox

The footbox is the shaped end of a sleeping bag or quilt where your feet sit. It's built with extra volume so the insulation isn't crushed flat by your toes, which is the coldest spot in most sleep systems.

Backpacking quilt

A backpacking quilt is a sleeping bag with the back removed and no hood, strapped to your sleeping pad instead. It cuts weight and bulk by deleting insulation that a bag crushes flat underneath you and that does nothing there anyway.

Pad attachment system

A pad attachment system is whatever keeps your bag or quilt joined to your sleeping pad, usually elastic straps that pass under the pad and clip to the quilt. It stops the two separating in the night on any surface that isn't flat.

Underquilt

An underquilt is an insulated quilt that hangs on the outside of a hammock, cradling it from below. Because your body never lies on it, nothing compresses the loft, which is why it works where a sleeping bag underneath you does not.
