How to Choose

How to Choose Gear Repair and Waterproofing Products

Most hiking gear doesn't die. It wears out a little at a time. A rain jacket starts to feel wet on the shoulders, boots start darkening at the toe after an hour in wet grass, or a tent seam drips onto the foot of your sleeping bag. Each of those has a fix that costs a fraction of a new jacket, boot or tent.

This page is those fixes: wash-ins and sprays that bring back a jacket's water repellency, wax and treatments for boots, peel-and-stick tape, seam sealers, a tent pole splint and a zipper kit. It's arranged by the gear each one fixes, rain jacket first, then boots, then tent and hardware.

The twelve picks come from Nikwax, Grangers and Gear Aid, the three names outdoor shops stock for this job. They're ranked on how much of a common failure each one fixes, from each maker's published instructions and what Amazon buyers report. My dad and I haven't used every one of them on our own gear, and I won't pretend we have.

4.7

Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Repair Tape, Clear, 3 in x 20 in

Tenacious Tape is the patch hikers carry, and the clear roll is the most versatile version. You cut a patch to size, round the corners and press it on. It sticks to most nylon and polyester gear, from a puffy to a tent fly, and Gear Aid says it holds through washing once it has set. It's a field repair that often ends up being the permanent one. A short length folded around a pencil or trekking pole weighs next to nothing and can save a trip.

Best Seam Sealer
Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealant and Adhesive, 1 oz
4.5

Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealant and Adhesive, 1 oz

Seam Grip WP is a urethane sealer and glue that cures into a flexible, waterproof layer. It's the fix for a tent or rain fly seam that drips, and for gluing down a patch or a tear that tape alone won't hold. Gear Aid's listing quotes a seam-coverage figure of about 12 feet for the 1 oz tube, so expect it to cover a few seams rather than a whole tent.Give it time. It needs to cure overnight before you pack the gear away, so it's a job for home rather than camp. And it's for polyurethane-coated fabric only: on silnylon, use Seam Grip SIL.

Detailed picks with verdicts, strengths, tradeoffs, and the situations where each one makes the most sense.

Best for a Wetting-Out Jacket
Nikwax Hardshell Cleaning & Waterproofing Duo-Pack
4.5 (26,080 Amazon ratings)

Nikwax Hardshell Cleaning & Waterproofing Duo-Pack

Quick verdict: If you buy one thing on this page, make it this. It pairs Tech Wash, a cleaner for waterproof clothing, with TX.Direct Wash-In, which restores the water repellency. Together they fix the most common reason a good rain jacket starts to feel wet inside.

It all happens in a washing machine, so there's no skill involved. Clean the machine's detergent drawer first, wash with Tech Wash, then run TX.Direct in a second cycle. Each bottle covers a few washes.

Why It Stands Out

  • Covers both steps: clean, then reproof
  • Machine-wash application, no technique to learn
  • Water-based, per Nikwax

Pros

  • Low-cost way to bring back a tired shell
  • Works on jackets and rain pants alike
  • Enough for several treatments

Cons

  • Not the right choice for jackets with a wicking liner
  • Two full wash cycles take time

Best Patch
Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Repair Tape, Clear, 3 in x 20 in
4.7 (8,259 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Tenacious Tape Repair Tape, Clear, 3 in x 20 in

Quick verdict: Tenacious Tape is the patch hikers carry, and the clear roll is the most versatile version.

Why It Stands Out

  • Peel-and-stick, no glue or cure time
  • Clear, so it hides on any color
  • Cut to any shape from one roll

Pros

  • Works in the field with no tools beyond scissors
  • Light enough to carry on every hike
  • Fixes puffies, shells, packs and tents

Cons

  • Needs clean, dry fabric to stick well
  • Not the right fix for a leaking seam

Best Seam Sealer
Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealant and Adhesive, 1 oz
4.5 (2,634 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Seam Grip WP Sealant and Adhesive, 1 oz

Quick verdict: Seam Grip WP is a urethane sealer and glue that cures into a flexible, waterproof layer. It's the fix for a tent or rain fly seam that drips, and for gluing down a patch or a tear that tape alone won't hold. Gear Aid's listing quotes a seam-coverage figure of about 12 feet for the 1 oz tube, so expect it to cover a few seams rather than a whole tent.

Give it time. It needs to cure overnight before you pack the gear away, so it's a job for home rather than camp. And it's for polyurethane-coated fabric only: on silnylon, use Seam Grip SIL.

Why It Stands Out

  • Seals seams and repairs tears in one tube
  • Stays flexible once cured
  • Works on nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl

Pros

  • Permanent repair
  • One tube handles a few problem seams
  • Also fixes sleeping pad and dry bag leaks

Cons

  • Long cure time
  • Won't bond to silicone-treated fabric

Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On Waterproofing, 300 ml
4.4 (4,631 Amazon ratings)

Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On Waterproofing, 300 ml

Quick verdict: This is the spray version of the wash-in in the duo-pack, and it exists for one reason. Nikwax's listing points to it for garments with a wicking inner lining, since you treat only the outside and the liner can keep pulling sweat away from your skin.

It also lets you spot-treat the parts that wear first: shoulders where pack straps rub, cuffs and the hood. Spray it on a clean, wet jacket and let it dry.

Why It Stands Out

  • Treats the outer fabric only
  • Lets you target high-wear areas
  • No washing machine needed

Pros

  • Right for lined jackets
  • Good for spot treatment
  • Pairs with Tech Wash

Cons

  • Slower than a wash-in for a whole jacket
  • Harder to get even coverage

Grangers Performance Repel Plus Spray, 500 ml
4.4 (1,256 Amazon ratings)

Grangers Performance Repel Plus Spray, 500 ml

Quick verdict: Grangers is the long-standing alternative to Nikwax, and Repel Plus is its spray-on reproofer for technical shells, with the listing naming Gore-Tex and eVent. You spray it on a clean, damp garment and let it dry.

The 500 ml bottle is larger than Nikwax's 300 ml spray, which suits a household with several shells to treat. Grangers also makes its own cleaner, Performance Wash, if you want to stay with one brand.

Why It Stands Out

  • Made for Gore-Tex, eVent and similar shells
  • Bigger bottle for multiple jackets
  • Spray lets you treat the outside only

Pros

  • Treats several jackets per bottle
  • Simple spray-and-dry application
  • Strong Amazon rating

Cons

  • Fewer reviews than the Nikwax sprays
  • Still needs a clean jacket first

Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof, Sponge-On
4.2 (1,264 Amazon ratings)

Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof, Sponge-On

Quick verdict: Most hiking boots and shoes today are a mix of fabric and leather, often with a membrane inside, and this is the treatment made for that mix. Nikwax says it's water-based and keeps the upper breathable, which matters on a Gore-Tex boot.

The sponge applicator makes it easy: clean the boots, apply it while they're still wet, wipe off the excess and let them dry naturally. Nikwax sells a footwear cleaning gel to go with it.

Why It Stands Out

  • Made for mixed fabric and leather uppers
  • Keeps membrane boots breathable
  • Built-in sponge applicator

Pros

  • Right for most modern hiking boots and shoes
  • No waiting for boots to dry first
  • Also works on trail shoes

Cons

  • Less conditioning for full-leather boots than a wax
  • Lower rating than the wax

Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather
4.6 (3,056 Amazon ratings)

Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather

Quick verdict: For a smooth leather boot, a wax does two jobs: it waterproofs the leather and keeps it from drying out and cracking. Nikwax's version is water-based and comes in a tube with an applicator, and Nikwax says it's safe on Gore-Tex-lined boots.

It's made for smooth leather only. Nubuck and suede need a different product, and on a boot with big fabric panels the Fabric & Leather Proof above is the better choice.

Why It Stands Out

  • Waterproofs and conditions in one step
  • Safe for membrane-lined boots, per Nikwax
  • Tube with a built-in applicator

Pros

  • Cheap enough to keep a tube at home
  • Strong rating from a large base of buyers
  • Leaves leather supple

Cons

  • Smooth leather only
  • Can darken lighter leather

Gear Aid Aquaseal SR Shoe Repair Adhesive, 1 oz
4.4 (3,190 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Aquaseal SR Shoe Repair Adhesive, 1 oz

Quick verdict: When a boot's sole starts peeling away at the toe, that's the end for a lot of boots, and it doesn't need to be. Aquaseal SR is a urethane adhesive that cures to a tough, flexible rubber. Gear Aid sells it for re-gluing soles, sealing holes and rebuilding worn heels.

Clean the surfaces, apply it, clamp or tape the sole shut and give it time to cure. It's a home repair, not a trail one, but it can add seasons to a boot you like.

Why It Stands Out

  • Cures to flexible, waterproof rubber
  • Re-glues soles and fills holes
  • Rebuilds worn heels

Pros

  • Saves a boot that's otherwise fine
  • Small 1 oz tube stores easily
  • Works on shoes and sandals too

Cons

  • Needs clamping and a long cure
  • Messy if you overapply it

Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof Spray, 500 ml
4.6 (2,707 Amazon ratings)

Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof Spray, 500 ml

Quick verdict: A tent fly loses its water repellency the same way a jacket does, and it also takes a beating from the sun. SolarProof restores the repellency and adds UV protection, according to Nikwax, for tents, packs and covers.

Pitch the tent, wet the fly, spray it evenly and wipe off the excess. It's the right buy for an older tent whose fly now soaks through instead of beading.

Why It Stands Out

  • Restores water repellency on tents
  • Adds UV protection to the fabric
  • Water-based spray

Pros

  • Extends the life of an older tent
  • Also works on packs and covers
  • Strong rating

Cons

  • A large fly takes most of a bottle
  • Not a fix for leaking seams

Gear Aid Seam Grip SIL Silicone Sealant, 1.5 oz
4.6 (1,599 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Seam Grip SIL Silicone Sealant, 1.5 oz

Quick verdict: Many ultralight tents and tarps use silicone-coated fabric, and a lot of them ship with seams you have to seal yourself. Seam Grip SIL is the sealer for that. Gear Aid's listing says it is for silicone-treated fabric, and quotes coverage of up to about 24 feet of seams per tube.

Pitch the tent taut, brush it thinly along the seams, and leave it up until it cures. Gear Aid's listing ties it to the older SilNet name.

Why It Stands Out

  • Made for silicone-coated fabric
  • Sized for a small tent's seams, per Gear Aid
  • Brush applicator in the box

Pros

  • The right chemistry for silnylon
  • Thin enough to flow into seams
  • Strong rating

Cons

  • Useless on polyurethane-coated fabric
  • Needs a pitched tent and dry weather

Gear Aid Tent Pole Splint, 5/8 in
4.2 (220 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Tent Pole Splint, 5/8 in

Quick verdict: Without a splint, a cracked pole at camp means a sagging tent for the rest of the trip. A splint is a short aluminum sleeve that slides over the break and gets taped in place, and it holds the pole together until you get home.

This is the 5/8 inch version. Gear Aid also sells a 1/2 inch one, so measure your pole before you buy. Many tents ship with a splint in the stuff sack already.

Why It Stands Out

  • Bridges a broken or bent pole section
  • Weighs next to nothing
  • Only needs tape to fit

Pros

  • Saves a trip for very little weight
  • Small enough to live in a repair kit
  • Very cheap

Cons

  • Size has to match your pole
  • Fewer Amazon reviews than the rest of this page

Gear Aid Zipper Repair Kit, 20 Pieces
4.1 (448 Amazon ratings)

Gear Aid Zipper Repair Kit, 20 Pieces

Quick verdict: Zippers fail more often than fabric, and most of the time the slider has worn out, not the teeth. This kit has replacement sliders in several sizes plus top stops, needles and thread, so you can swap a worn slider instead of replacing the whole zipper.

It's the most hands-on fix on this page. You'll need pliers and a little patience, and you have to match the slider size to your zipper. It also has the lowest rating here, so read the size guide before you start.

Why It Stands Out

  • Covers the most common zipper failure
  • Several slider sizes in one kit
  • Includes stops, needles and thread

Pros

  • Far cheaper than a zipper replacement
  • Fixes tents, sleeping bags and packs
  • Enough parts for several repairs

Cons

  • Lowest rating on this page
  • Slider sizing takes some figuring out

Buying Guide

What to Check Before You Buy

Is your rain jacket leaking, or just wetting out?

Most rain jackets that feel like they leak are wetting out. The DWR finish on the outside has worn off, the face fabric soaks up water, and the membrane can't breathe through a wet layer, so your own sweat condenses inside. It feels exactly like a leak, but the membrane is usually fine.

The test is simple: sprinkle water on the shoulders. If it beads and rolls off, the finish is working. If it spreads into a dark patch, the DWR needs reviving. A real leak shows up as one wet spot inside in the same place every time, usually a seam or a hole, and that needs a patch or sealer instead.

That sprinkle is a home version of the lab spray test fabric makers use to grade water repellency, AATCC 22 in the US and ISO 4920 in Europe. Both spray water on a taut sample and score how much of it wets the surface.

Should you clean gear before you reproof it?

Yes, and it fixes more than people expect. Dirt, sunscreen and body oils mask the water-repellent finish, and Nikwax says ordinary detergent leaves residues that attract water. A wash with a technical cleaner can sometimes bring the beading back on its own.

Gore-Tex's own care guidance also says a warm tumble dry can reactivate the finish, so try a clean wash and a dry before you buy a reproofer. If the water still soaks in after that, then the finish is worn out and needs replacing.

Should you use a wash-in or a spray-on reproofer?

A wash-in treats the whole garment evenly in a washing machine, and it's the easy choice for a plain shell. A spray goes only where you aim it, which is what you want on a jacket with a wicking inner lining, a pack, or just the shoulders and cuffs that wear first.

Nikwax's listing points to its spray-on version for garments with a wicking lining, so only the outside gets treated and the liner can keep pulling sweat away from your skin. For boots and tents, the treatment is always applied by hand.

Which seam sealer should you use on a tent?

Seam sealers aren't interchangeable. Seam Grip WP is a urethane that bonds to polyurethane-coated nylon and polyester, which is most rain gear and most tents. Silicone-coated fabric, sold as silnylon or silpoly, rejects it, and that's what Seam Grip SIL is for.

Check the tent maker's care page before you buy. It usually names the coating and the sealer it recommends. Using the wrong one is the most common seam-sealing mistake, and it looks fine until the first storm peels it off.

If your jacket soaks through
Clean, then reproof

Wash it in Tech Wash and follow with TX.Direct in the same duo-pack. That's two machine cycles and a dry, and it covers the most common reason a good shell starts to feel wet inside.

If there's a hole or a rip
Peel-and-stick patch

Cut a piece of Tenacious Tape that overlaps the damage on every side, round the corners so they don't lift, and press it down hard on clean, dry fabric. It works on a puffy, a rain shell or a tent fly, and it can go on in the field.

If a seam drips
Urethane or silicone

Brush Seam Grip WP along a coated nylon or polyester seam and let it cure overnight. If the tent is silnylon, use Seam Grip SIL instead, because a urethane sealer won't hold on silicone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When water stops beading on it, not on a schedule. For a jacket worn every week through a wet season that might be once or twice a year. Wash it first and give it a warm tumble dry if the care label allows, since Gore-Tex says that can reactivate the finish, and reproof only if it doesn't.
