Parts of a hiking boot

A hiking boot is an upper built on a sole of three layers, and most of what separates a good boot from a bad one for your foot is hidden: the stiffening between the layers, the cup around your heel and the room in the front.

What are the parts of a hiking boot?

A hiking boot is an upper on a layered sole. The outsole and its lugs grip the ground, the midsole cushions, and a shank or rock plate can stiffen the sole between the two. Inside, the footbed sits under your foot, the heel counter holds your heel and the toe box gives your toes room.

  1. Outsole

    The rubber layer that touches the trail. REI notes that harder outsoles last longer but can feel slick off trail, while softer ones cushion more and wear down faster.

  2. Lugs

    The traction bumps on the outsole. REI says deeper lugs generally grip better on rocky or uneven ground, widely spaced lugs shed mud more easily, and shallower lugs put more rubber on wet rock.

  3. Midsole

    The cushioning layer between the outsole and your foot, which sets how the boot feels as you walk. REI names EVA and TPU as the most common materials; TPU is firmer and more durable, so it turns up in extended backpacking boots.

  4. EVA foam

    The lighter, cushier and less expensive of the two common midsole foams, per REI. It compresses permanently with use, which is why a midsole can go flat before the tread looks worn.

  5. Shank

    A stiff insert sandwiched between the midsole and outsole of some boots, which REI puts at 3 to 5 millimeters thick. It adds load-bearing stiffness, which is what lets a boot support a heavy pack.

  6. Rock plate

    A semiflexible plate of carbon fiber or plastic between the midsole and outsole, below the shank if there is one. REI says plates like it keep jagged rocks from bruising your feet, and they are most common in trail-running shoes.

  7. Rand

    The rubber strip bonded around the lower edge of the upper, most often at the toe, where it is also called a toe cap. It takes the scuffs from rock and roots that would otherwise wear through fabric or leather.

  8. Toe box

    The front of the boot around your toes. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says it should leave room to wiggle your toes, and REI lists toes hitting the end of the boot on an incline as a fit problem to raise.

  9. Heel counter

    The stiffened back of the boot that wraps your heel. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says it should grip your heel well enough to keep you stable.

  10. Footbed

    The removable insole your foot stands on. REI suggests aftermarket insoles, also called footbeds, for comfort, support or fit, and checks length with the stock one: stand on it and leave a thumb's width past your longest toe.

  11. Gusseted tongue

    A tongue sewn to the sides of the upper with fabric panels instead of hanging free, so grit and water cannot get in along the laces.

  12. Waterproof membrane

    A waterproof, breathable liner such as Gore-Tex built into the upper of boots sold as waterproof. REI notes the trade: compared with a ventilated mesh shoe it can make your feet sweat on summer days.

    Not a part but a measurement on the sole: how much higher the heel sits than the forefoot, in millimeters. REI notes that minimalist shoes generally have a lower drop.

How do the parts of a hiking boot work together?

The sole protects and the upper holds. The outsole grips, the midsole cushions, and a shank or rock plate adds stiffness where a heavy load or sharp rock calls for it. Above the sole, the heel counter and the lacing keep your foot from sliding, and the toe box gives it room to splay.

That is why a stiff, heavily built boot is not automatically the better one. Each layer is a trade between support and weight, and the right mix depends on the load you carry and the ground you walk on.

Common questions

What is the difference between the insole and the midsole?

The insole, or footbed, is the removable layer your foot rests on. The midsole is built into the sole below it, does most of the cushioning, and cannot be swapped out.

What is the toe cap on a hiking boot?

The rubber at the front of the boot, part of the rand. It takes the knocks from rock and roots so the upper does not wear through at the toe.
