How a twist lock works
Inside the joint is a plastic expander on a threaded stud. Twisting the sections screws the expander along the thread so it swells against the inside of the outer tube. It's an elegant mechanism with no external parts, and it's why older poles look so clean.
How it fails
It also fails in the most annoying way possible. Grit, water and wear all reduce the expander's grip, and the failure shows up as a pole that slowly collapses under your weight on a descent. You then have to stop, extend it, and twist harder, which strips the plastic faster and makes the next collapse sooner.
Servicing one
They can be serviced. Take the sections apart, dry and clean everything, and replace the expander if it's worn or cracked, since spares are cheap and most brands sell them. But the reason nearly every current pole uses a lever lock is that a twist lock demands this maintenance to stay reliable and a lever lock does not.

The common mistake
Over-tightening to stop a slip
Twisting harder past the point of grip cracks the plastic expander or seizes the joint, and a seized twist lock is a pole you cannot pack. Take it apart, dry and clean the shaft and the plug, and replace the expander if it is worn.
